The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced a proposal that would require on-board electronic devices to monitor whether truck and bus operators are meeting limits on driving time, ultimately eliminating paperwork and increasing safety. While some fear the cost of on-board electronic devices will be high, early indicators point to cost justification via improved efficiencies in fuel economy. On-board computers allow companies to monitor fuel efficiency, driver behaviors, habits, and out-of-route-miles as well. Fuel economy outliers alert fleet managers to quickly adjust incorrect engine ECM settings and address driver behaviors.
